In the past there was a good availability of beautiful things throughout and there was only a limited number of collectors, but the world has changed. Today not only the Europeans or Americans
collect vintage watches as in the old days, but also the Chinese, Indian or Russian clientel entered this market and belong now to the collectors community. The problem is – the community has
grown enormously, but there is only a limited availability of good products. The high demand for vintage Rolex watches and the decreasing supply cause a constant price increase, but we have to be
careful. Let’s hope, that we do not only have speculators but more the real enthusiasts buying and wearing what they really like, and not only because of the price. I can only speak for ourselves
and I know, that all of the collectors pieces we sold during the last decades still remain in these collections and disappeared from the trade. If I compare the respective purchase prices with
those of today I can confirm, that our clientel invested always very well – and that is applicable for all Rolex models we have sold. The essential criteria is of course the extreme high quality
level we sold and continue to sell to our valuable clientel. Only supreme quality and flawless products are those which finally represent a good investment and result in excellent performance –
and this fact does not only apply to Rolex watches.
Our clientel appreciates this uncompromising policy very much and moreover is not willing to compromise in this respect. I would say, that our entire clientel insists on this standard of quality
wherever in the world – and this is a good thing. Why should somebody accept less than the best; but first of all you need to know what is the best and what needs to be observed.
Fundamentally we first have to explain our customers the importance of our philosophy and the necessity of our standards of quality. Those, who do us not know, might think that we do what we do
as kind of a job creation, however it is not. The whole procedure makes sense and is absolutely necessary. First of all we have to know if a timepiece is registered as a stolen one. If you
believe this might happen rarely you are unfortunately wrong. For example 3 weeks ago we just had such a case ; one of our clients highly valuable watch was stolen. He went to the police and made
a report. With this report and the watches individual details such as reference, serial number etc. we registered this timepiece in Geneva. Whenever this watch will appear somewhere with Rolex in
the entire world, it will be held to return it to the proper owner. Furthermore it is about the authenticity of a timepiece and I have to say, that Rolex does an outstanding and meticulous work.
All components of a watch will be verified; after it turns out, that all components are original, they will issue an offer for a service. You cannot imagine what we experienced over the years. I
have a file, filled with „curiosities“ – it is hair rising.
The spectrum ranges from complete fakes to watches consisting of various Rolex components of different models, but these are so refined, that the adequate know how, as well as the complete
database of the manufacturer, is needed to uncover these products. Recently we had a beautiful Rolex Submariner, reference 5513/0, dating back to the 70’s. Rolex refused to touch this timepiece
as the serial number did not belong to a Submariner but to a Day-Date model. Yet you are asking me how something like this can happen ? The answer is very simple ; for example if a watch has been
stolen you have two possibilities. A mediocre dealer can blog out the serial number but this of course causes an enormous loss of the value - or second option, he will equip the watch with
another serial number. No watchmaker in the world is able to identify this change of numbers, nor can a watchmaker confirm if the serial numer in question belongs to this specific timepiece. Only
the motherhouse can give concrete information due to the fact, that only the manufacturer has full access to the entire database.
By the way, not only Rolex, but also other houses like Patek Philippe, IWC, Cartier and many more provide outstanding service. Either the company has an archive which allows research and finally
confirmation of the authenticity of a piece, and/or the products will be examined precisely to guarantee the originality of an object. Finally it is very simple why we follow our rules without
any exception. We want to have a returning clientel and also, that everybody has lots of pleasure with its collectors piece in the future. We’ve been doing this for over 30 years and I am proud
to say, that we never had any complaint. Obviously we chose the right path which is honoured by our valuable clientel.
That’s the funny thing, it is not costly at all. You need only a little bit of time, and I think this is the reason why most of our competitors do not do alike – the loss of time is maybe too
capital-intensive for them (time is money). I take the position, that our clientel is our highest capital and customers satisfaction should have absolute priority ; unfortunately not everybody
seems to have the same opinion.
Depending on the model and age of a timepiece a regular service with Rolex is around 800.- to 1'300.- Swiss Francs. If a watch has exceeded a certain age it can become more expensive ; at that
point we do not speak about a simple service but about a restoration, which is in accordance more costly. We had quotations beyond 10'000.- Swiss Francs, but I have to point out, that there are
some special watches justifying such an effort. For example, if the value of a watch is significantly influenced because of a special dial, like the famous Rolex Daytona « Paul Newman ». I as a
final customer want to be 100% sure about the authenticity of such a timepiece. Such a special dial-variation can exceed the price of a « regular » Daytona easily about 100'000.- Swiss Francs or
more. And here I want to be absolutely sure – I do not only want to trust the beautiful blue eyes of my opposite – the keyword is absolute certainty!
It becomes very unpleasant. Not only Rolex, no, all brands have the right to neutralize counterfeits. Is for example only one component of the watch a fake, the brand name on this part will be
removed and the watch will be returned. The serial number of the timepiece will be registered and Rolex will never touch this watch again.
